Special or cheap police…

I’ve worked with loads of specials over the years… and they fit into a few general categories:

1. those that are ‘trying before buying’ and intend to join the Police…

2. those that are looking to flesh out their CV with a bit of public service…

3. those that have no life and like uniforms…

They make an invaluable contribution to numbers in an increasingly dwindling front line…

…and that that’s the issue…

Some forces like Gloucester, Avon and Somerset et al are recruiting like mad as they are now cut to the bone…and are struggling to cope.

BUT, are they value for money?

Eh? I thought they were free? Ed.

Yes they are but they have to be trained and equipped…which is running at about £2700-3000 PER officer…

Given that they are not paid, the turn over rate is significant- it’s not an easy job even when you are being paid £30K… but facing the crap we face for nothing is not the act of a rational person in my opinion.

However, they are, of course cheaper in the long run if you think about pension etc… and you can get rid of them easy enough…

It’s the future eh?

  1. Off topic but have you heard from self-proclaimed king of the internet and general buffoon MTG? He has not commented on any of the blogs I read every day.

    • No… He’s not on the dm comments either… Hope he’s ok… The troll is still here… I’ve just checked the spam q and he’s been commenting for months before i restarted… Strange chap… We should feel sorry for them both to have such empty and sad lives i guess…
