A respected university tutor – who lectures on political violence – has escaped the sack despite being convicted off assaulting a police officer during a student protest in Manchester.
Dr Emmanuel-Pierre Guittet has been urged to ‘practice what he preaches’ but told he will keep his job at the University of Manchester.
The 34-year-old was one of five men arrested after clashes broke out between police and demonstrators during a protest over tuition fees.
The French Canadian – who has a PhD in Political Science and International Relations and a Masters degree in Politics and Sociology – denied assaulting the officer but was convicted after a trial. He was fined £400 and ordered to pay £75 compensation.
PC Gary McCarthy claimed father-of-two Guittet, who describes himself as an ‘anarcho-constructivist’, turned aggressive during the protest lashing out, punching him and grabbing his thumb and twisting his arm.
He had been set to appeal against the conviction, but has now withdrawn the appeal and the assault will stay on file.
A spokesman from the university confirmed the lecturer would continue work despite the conviction.
Says it all really… a teacher arrested and convicted for attacking a Police officer, keeps his job…
Can’t see that happening in reverse somehow…
