Swedes…

When I was in training we had our Swedish brothers (and one very lovely sister) with us for a couple of days… We were role-playing that stock favourite-stop and search… They were all recorded on VCR of course, for those hour long debriefs…

The person to be searched was given a play-gun and a brief that they were to mirror the actions of the officers i.e. if we were nice and polite etc. they would be too…

The officers searching were given similar instructions…

So, up walks my mate after the Sgt shouts ‘action!’…

“Hello sir, I am PC Jones from Blandford Police station. I have information you may be carrying a prohibited weapon and under sec one of PACE I am going to search you for that weapon.”

”ok…”

Search over he got some nice feedback…

The Swedish officers sat there in silence… looks of horror on their faces…

“Err… would you like to comment on this and show us how you do it in Sweden?”, said Sgt.

“Ok. First, we patrol in twos. It is too dangerous to be alone. If I had received this information, I would put my hand on my gun like this [he pretends] my partner would walk to the man and say ‘on your knees with your hands on your head!’

The stooge, still in role play mode ‘mirrored’ the aggression… ”no fcuk off”…

The officer drew his pretend gun… ”NOW! NO MORE WARNING!”

”FCUK OFF”, came the reply…

One second later his mate ploughed him into the ground… ”STOPPPPPP!”Said sgt…

“What are you doing!!?!?”

”He has a gun! We are the Police… he wasn’t doing what he is ordered… he will be arrested…”

We then did another… The scenario was: you are on patrol at 0230hrs when you see a known burglar looking at the gates of a factory. He walks off when he sees you but you manage to catch up. There have been a number of burglary other buildings in the area recently… Deal as you see…

The Swedes watched as my mate chatted to the chap about what he was doing out so late on a school night and could he please search him etc…

The Swedes went next. Ingrid (6ft tall, slim, blond and beautiful) walked up to Billy the burglar held out her hand and said, ”Papers!”

”What?”, asked Billy.

”Your papers, give them to me please.”

”Err… I haven’t got any…”

Ingrid’s hand went to her gun, ”Face the wall and put your hands on your head…”

”Ok…stop there”, said sgt… ”what’s this?”

”In Sweden, citizens are required to carry papers showing ID. This is to help the police and identify you to the authorities. The only people that do not carry them are people that don’t want to be identified…criminals. I would arrest him and verify his identity.”

”Oh… we don’t have ID papers…”, said sgt…

The Swedes looked at each other in puzzlement… ”How do you verify the person’s identity then?”, said Sven…

”Err.. we ask them…”

The Swedes had given up by now and were, no doubt, looking forwards to going home…

It was at this time I realised joining up may have been a mistake…

The concept the Swedes and every other country in the world has grasped bar us, is…

”You cannot really be free in society if you are in fear of crime…”

For some reason, we think the path to freedom is reducing the powers of the state and the Police… this is false.

How many times have you heard people say, ”I’m a prisoner in my own home…”? The only way to have that freedom is TO STAMP ON THOSE THAT SEEK TO REMOVE IT-CRIMINALS AND THOSE THAT BEHAVE IN AN ANTI-SOCIAL MANNER…

I saw an Iraqi chap in TV t’other day talking wistfully about the old days when Saddam was in charge. No, you couldn’t vote;  no, you couldn’t put up ”I hate Saddam” posters… but you could walk the streets without the fear of being shot/stabbed… his kids could go to school ON THEIR OWN, his wife could shop without the fear of being blown up… why?

There is no real law now…

That is what the Police are for… without that and a legal system that supports us we are doomed…
