A woman who was abused on the internet has won court backing in her bid to gain the identities of those who targeted her.
Nicola Brookes, from Brighton, was falsely portrayed as a paedophile and drug dealer by internet trolls.
She has been granted a High Court order asking Facebook to reveal the IP addresses of people who had abused her so she can prosecute them.
Hey troll, remember how you keep doing the same? Saying I nonce my kids etc?

Keep a note of date, time and IP address of the trolls and if at all possible, make sure the server upon which the blog runs is kept in sync with one of the internet time servers, using NTP.
The reason I say this is from my time as a NOC techie in an ISP (Supanet, if you must know), where some of my job was playing hunt-the-troll in our Radius log files. Pretty much all residential ISPs do not assign fixed IP addresses to their lusers, but instead assign a dynamic IP from a pool to lusers as they log onto the service. Because of this, the ISP then keeps logs (usually with a Radius server) of which username grabs an IP when, and when they log out again. To identify the troll, you need to know exactly when he was at his dastardly deeds, and common behaviour for trolls way back then was to log in, muck about doing whatever then right at the end of the session do something naughty and log off quick. Didn’t help the silly sods one little bit, mind, but that was what they used to do.
Logging servers (in fact, ALL servers) in an ISP will be synced to a timeserver or timeservers plural; it makes investigating break-ins and whatnot much, much easier. The times on the Radius authentication logs will be accurate to microseconds; make sure your troll logs are equally accurate, and note the offset from GMT as well.
Then when you tell the court about the Troll, the humble techie who gets the job of hunting the bugger down will have ever so easy a job of it (he’ll probably have a better automated tool than I had, too).

I’m glad someone has been brave enough to follow this through. Enough is enough. These trolls are psychopaths – who else would seek out people and enjoy tormenting them? And they have their followers, who desperately want to be a “part of something”, those with very low self-esteem and seek attention. We can’t ask those who post these vile messages to look at themselves and ask why. This is not something they are capable of. They need to be sued and they need their internet access to be taken away from them. Some might also benefit from moving out of their parents’ homes and finally be made to grow up!
